I think the underlying problem is that the academic definitions—of which there seem to be many that ultimately come down to (based on my reading of a handful of reviews) a set of attributes that allow us to persevere through difficult circumstance—have been bastardized and molded into something vague and poppy.
The average person is not being fed academic definitions. They are in large part being told that grinding through some difficult-for-the-sake-of-being-difficult physical task will make them better at (insert anything). That’s how I and a few PhDs in sports performance and psychology and general psych I spoke to for this piece have seen it positioned.
